Our Contributions and Impact

SWS has always prioritized mature, issue-oriented discussions, embodying servant leadership that benefits the community. Our dedication to extending a helping hand has been unwavering, often prioritizing the welfare of others over our own members. However, we take comfort in knowing that our efforts have sown seeds that will bear abundant fruit in the future.

We have significantly influenced infrastructure development, including roads, churches, and schools. Our initiatives have provided a solid foundation for those planning to build homes in the village, offering insights into creating a harmonious blend of urban and rural life.

Our support for education has been instrumental in enabling many individuals to pursue higher education. We celebrate their successes, knowing that the seeds we have planted will grow into trees that provide shelter and nourishment to others in need. Our engagement in security matters has brought about positive changes both locally and remotely.

While SWS remains apolitical, we recognize our responsibility to influence thoughts and minds for good governance and leadership. Our famous New Year celebrations have evolved into Shiraha Day, designed to strengthen community bonds and prevent unintentional inbreeding.

Background

History of SWS

On a fateful afternoon of December 20, 1981, at 4:15 pm, the Shiraha Welfare Society (SWS) was conceived and formed at Ngong Hills Hotel. This moment marked the beginning of a journey that would transform the lives of many. Under the pioneering leadership of Omwami Fred Akolo, Evans Mukolwe, AEO Wanyanga, Omachi Musa, and James Opindi, SWS was officially registered on June 11, 1985, with registration number 12590. Since then, SWS has celebrated 39 years of registration in 2024, but its story began even earlier. With gratitude to the Almighty God, we recognize our journey of resilience, growth, and unwavering commitment to our community.

The Shiraha Welfare Society, affectionately known as abasiani be Shiraha Welfare, has matured over the years, evolving into a vibrant community of individuals who carry the heart and spirit of young men, ready to embrace responsibilities and nurture future generations. Our journey has been marked by significant milestones, thanks to the dedicated leadership and collective efforts of our members.

The Journey of SWS

The pioneering officials handed over the society in 2004 to the capable hands of Dr. Wilberforce Wanyanga (Chairman), Mr. Peter Ambenje (Secretary), and Mr. Jacob Makanga (Treasurer). This second office led the society until 2022, when they passed the baton to the current leadership comprising Mr. Omung’ala Akolo (Chairman), Franklin Shabanji (Secretary), and Mr. Stanley Amariati (Treasurer). Under their leadership, and with the unwavering support of our members, SWS has continued to thrive, holding monthly meetings and maintaining a vibrant presence even during the COVID-19 pandemic through virtual meetings.

Our social outreach has earned us a respected name, particularly among the Larger Shiraha Community in Nairobi. The impact of SWS is evident in the accolades we receive in churches and schools, often from individuals who have not personally met us but have benefited from our support. Our contributions to the development of churches and schools have left a lasting mark on the community.
